Cosplay: Taking Doodles to Another Level

I think you know you have made it as a successful illustrator when there are people who are willing to spend a fortune to look exactly like a character you created. Cosplay, which means Costume Play, is a huge movement among fans of anime, manga, video games or films where one dresses like the anime character without being in the context of a play or some sort of Halloween party. Such an event happened in Brooklyn last weekend at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden’s Cherry Blossom Festival. I wrote about the event last weekend (click HERE to read about it). I thought maybe I would share some of the Cosplay costumes that I photographed at this event. If you know what characters they are, please mention it in the comments section.

Will have to consider dressing up as one of my illustrations one day! Looks like they had fun doing it.

Hope you enjoyed seeing the Cosplay show as much as I did!

  1. Couldn’t tell you who any of these characters might be, but the shots are great. There is a huge comic convention here in Toronto each year, and we get to see some crazy costumes. It was funny this past year because I saw Superman running across a busy street. It looked just like a scene from a movie.

    1. Visited Canada a bunch of times but haven’t made it to Toronto yet. I have no doubt they have a huge comic convention there because I almost went their for a huge origami convention. They seem to embrace their fellow geeks with all the creative passion as would be expected when birds of the same feather get together. I’m a huge fan of their Hot House animation short competition done by the Canadian National Film Board too. Creativity is in no short supply over there.

      1. Nice! The NFB does a lot of great work. I actually work a couple blocks from the NFB. We also just finished our documentary film festival called Hot Docs. Its pretty huge, and has a tonne of amazing docs each year.

    1. I could be wrong but are the top characters from the Final Fantasy IX video game and the girl next to her some sort of Sailor Moon character? I wasn’t sure. I should have asked them.

      1. I have no idea about the girl on the left but I’m pretty sure she’s from FF9 and the girl on the right is from Cardcaptor Sakura. Not sure about the others though, maybe they aren’t all in cosplay.

      2. I think the guy dressed up in the long white dress with the long black hair and glasses might be the girl in Howl’s Moving Castle. The one with the straw hat, might be from Miyazaki’s last film, The Wind Rises. I could be wrong. Yeah, the others are just having some fun with Japanese culture, I think. Thanks for the Cardcaptor Sakura one. I think you’re right!
